oddinclinations:

silently ill

nothing resounds louder than our silence
as we scream inside, afraid to seek solace
in another’s words, one’s tight embrace
perhaps we fear assistance
healing our wounds
in an act of self-preservation
pleading
don’t send me back there
don’t send me away
don’t send electric…

People use drugs, legal and illegal, because their lives are intolerably painful or dull. They hate their work and find no rest in their leisure. They are estranged from their families and their neighbors. It should tell us something that in healthy societies drug use is celebrative, convivial, and occasional, whereas among us it is lonely, shameful, and addictive. We need drugs, apparently, because we have lost each other.

bric-a-brac: Language Lesson 1976 | Heather McHugh

muscovite:

When Americans say a man
takes liberties, they mean

he’s gone too far. In Philadelphia today I saw
a kid on a leash look mom-ward

and announce his fondest wish: one
bicentennial burger, hold

the relish. Hold is forget,
in American.

On the courts of Philadelphia
the rich prepare

to serve, to fault. The language is a game as well,
